Starting with a seedling studio in Thornhill Ontario, Yoga Tree has continued to expand across the GTA with the support of our community. Since 2007, we have added five studios in downtown Toronto including Richmond and Spadina, Yonge and Eglinton, Bay and Dundas, and uptown in Richmond Hill and Vaughan. With each new growth, we rely on our roots in this community to stay grounded and connected to our core mission: to cultivate a sense of well-being in each class, so our members leave Yoga Tree and re-enter the world a little lighter, a little happier.
PAST
Jason and Debbie met each other before they discovered yoga. At the University of Waterloo, Jason studied biomedical sciences and Debbie double majored in business and environmental studies. Following graduation, the friendship blossomed alongside new, successful careers.
It was then, the pair discovered an unbridled enthusiasm for yoga. Initially interested in soothing scoliosis pain, yoga soon became a dedicated practice. The pair flew to India to study their hobby. Jason studied Hatha and Ashtanga Vinyasa in Mysore while Debbie studied Ayurvedic Medicine in Jaipur. On their return, work wasn’t wholly satisfying.
So, the Toronto-locals left their professional careers to pursue their passion. There, yoga became a career—Jason teaching private classes. But travelling between classes left yoga lacking one key component: community.
In 2007, Jason and Debbie paired together to co-found Yoga Tree, a community studio that offered not a single style of yoga but blended lineages for a varied, adaptable practice suitable for everyone.

Present

With 13 years behind us, we’ve been blessed to have the privilege to work with incredibly talented instructors and be supported by a strong management and front desk team. We continue to empower our members on their journey of personal growth and well-being. As a community-focused studio, we are rising to the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. We miss our community, and we’ve pivoted to stay connected with our team and members.
With Online LIVE yoga classes streamed via Zoom and Yoga on Demand’s pre-recorded library -accessible anytime, we continue to foster the core tenants of our studio: yoga and community.
As Senior Teacher Director, Jason continues to actively build our community by training and certifying yoga instructors. A Yoga Alliance certified program, Yoga Tree’s training infuses biomechanics and science into the traditional lineages of yoga over a 250-hour course. Explore yoga teacher training certification.
Debbie has been recognized as one of “Canada’s Top 100 Female Entrepreneurs” by Canada Business magazine. She is also the recipient for 2016 Canada’s Next Top Entrepreneur Award presented by KPMG & Ivey School of Business. She has been active in the Toronto community promoting startups and women entrepreneurship. In the past, she has been a guest speaker at Ivey School of Business, Rotman Commerce, University of Waterloo and City of Toronto Small Business Forum to inspire the next generation of leaders.
Debbie continues to provide support on the backend to ensure smooth operations of Yoga Tree and collaborate with the team to ensure Yoga Tree continues on it’s growth journey.
